Subrata Roy Sahara: Former Tihar Jail Superintendent Sunil Gupta has made shocking revelations about the special privileges enjoyed by business tycoon Subrata Roy Sahara during his imprisonment from March 4, 2014, to May 3, 2016. Gupta claimed that Roy had access to private secretaries, alcohol, and frequent visits from air hostesses, raising serious concerns about the jail’s administration.
Unusual Jail Privileges for Subrata Roy
According to Sunil Gupta, Subrata Roy was not kept in a regular jail cell but was housed in the court complex within the Tihar premises. He was allowed this facility on the grounds that he needed to conduct video conferences with buyers from Europe and Western countries to arrange for the repayment of ₹24,000 crore to investors.
Gupta further claimed that while regular prisoners were locked in their cells at night, Roy was only locked inside the court complex from the outside, giving him much more freedom than any other inmate.
Alcohol Bottles and Air Hostess Visits in Jail
One of the most shocking claims made by Gupta was the recovery of alcohol bottles from Roy’s cell. Additionally, air hostesses reportedly visited him multiple times a day and stayed with him for hours. These incidents raise serious concerns about how such violations were allowed inside one of India’s most secure prisons.
Gupta revealed that he had raised complaints with the then-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, but no action was taken against Roy or the jail authorities facilitating these luxuries.
Court-Approved Facilities for Subrata Roy
Despite being in jail, Roy was allowed to have a private secretary, a facility approved by the Supreme Court. According to Gupta, Roy appointed a female secretary, which further questioned the ethics of such a special arrangement for a high-profile prisoner.
Whistleblower Faced Harassment
Sunil Gupta claimed that after he exposed the irregularities in Tihar Jail, he was harassed by the administration. He alleged that he was given a 15-page charge sheet related to 10-year-old financial irregularities, which was later withdrawn after he was cleared of all allegations.
Why Was Subrata Roy in Jail?
Subrata Roy Sahara was arrested on the orders of the Supreme Court for failing to return ₹24,000 crore to investors. Initially, he was kept in jail, but later, due to “special circumstances,” he was allowed video conferencing facilities to negotiate the sale of his assets.
