Digital Arrest Scam: In a shocking case of cyber fraud, Berhampur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Geetanjali Dash was tricked into paying ₹14 lakh after scammers posed as Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and put her under “digital arrest.”

How the Vice-Chancellor Became a Victim

Fake ED Officer Call: On February 12, Prof. Dash received a call from a fraudster claiming to be an ED officer.

Threat of Financial Fraud Case: The scammer told her that crores of rupees had been deposited in her name, and that her Aadhaar number was linked to financial irregularities being monitored by the Supreme Court.

Emotional Manipulation: The caller discussed her family details, making the scam seem more authentic.

Demand for Money: The fraudster demanded ₹14 lakh, claiming it was necessary to clear her account before an audit.

Payment via Bank Cheque: Over four days, the scammer convinced her to transfer the money, which she did via cheque.

Scam Exposed: Prof. Dash realized she was duped when the caller’s number was switched off after the payment.

Cyber Crime Case Filed

Berhampur Cyber Police registered a case on February 24 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Information Technology (IT) Act.

The case includes Sections 318(4), 319(2), 336(2), 336(3), 340(2), 308(2), 351(2) of BNS, and 66(C), 66(D) of IT Act.

Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway and fraudsters will be nabbed soon.

The police warned citizens to stay cautious, avoid unknown calls, and never share personal or financial details with unknown persons.
